Synopsis

"If you called Brian Kessler a romantic, you'd be partially right: many of his poems are concerned with yearning, of love requited and unrequited, of desire and want and beauty. But like looking through the lens of a kaleidoscope, you would only be seeing one part of an ever-changing picture. One twist of fate, in the space between a poem's beginning and ending, and Kessler has changed the axis of his world vision: vivid textural flashes of lean description bury the enormity of subjective emotional states into an entire cosmos of protean power simply too big and active to acknowledge that the small beings within have feelings that matter. It's entirely possible that ethereal concepts of love, or even simpler acts of consideration, could be lost within Kesslers rapid-fire evocations of seasons, landforms and weather patterns. Yet love, it would seem, conquers all; Kessler folds these elemental forces back in on themselves, uses them to reaffirm the potency of human longing. The effect, overall, is that of microcosms and macrocosms morphing into one another, from minute detail to enormous fugue states, leaving the reader with an acute and visceral sense of contact. It's a clever poetic alchemy, in which the sands of a desert become fused into a small ashtray in a hotel lobby; not clever in a knowing ironic way, but in an engaging soulful eulogy. Kesslers words on the page vary enormously--spun through the gravities of his centrifugal perspective, they sometimes seem like ants, other times like a cascade of chopsticks. They disorient, drag the eye around as if insects buzz near the readers ears. For the few seconds when Kessler sacrifices kinetic energy for stillness, we also feel his shortness of breath... the profundity of the image he sees in front of him." Simon Herbert, Art Monthly
